Ben was born with an aortic coarctation and a ventricular septal defect.  He had an emergency surgery at 4 days old after turning blue in the maternity ward at a local hospital.  The Children’s hospital of Philadelphia sent a cardiac nurse in a special cardiac ambulance to pick Ben up locally and get him safely and swiftly to Philly.  At 6 weeks old, Ben had an open-heart surgery to extend and patch his aorta.  We later learned that Big Hearts to Little Hearts funded the transport vehicle that carried the nurse to the local hospital to make sure Ben had the proper care at the local hospital and for the trip to Chop.  They were also responsible for some of the home cooked meals other parents, and I received while living there after our babies’ heart surgeries.  They have helped so many families like mine over the years.

An estimated 40,000 babies are born each year with a congenital heart defect.  Ben was one of those babies.  Today, Ben’s chd repair is closely monitored by the cardiac team at The Children’s hospital of Philadelphia.  He is seen annually for tests and a cardiologist review.  Chop saved Ben’s life and it has been an outstanding life indeed.

Please consider donating to this fundraiser for Big Hearts to Little Hearts as they continue to support Chop in cardiac research, medical supplies and support for the most outstanding heart patients we love and those we haven’t yet met.

Thank you and God bless you all,
